USM maintenance guide

USM Haller units and all tabletops
DRY CLEANING
- Always use a soft cloth to wipe the surface dry.
WET CLEANING
- A soft cloth is best for wet cleaning. Dip the cloth in water, wring it out thoroughly, then clean the surface. For heavy soiling, use only a cleaning solution with a pH below 9.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Do not leave the product wet for an extended period, as water may penetrate the surface.
- Never use abrasive cloths or scouring sponges, as they may scratch the surface.
- Never apply chemicals, solvents or cleaning solutions directly to the product.
CARE
- Do not place USM products outdoors or near fire, water or coastal environments with high salt concentrations. The product warranty does not apply in these conditions.

DRY CLEANING
- Light dust can be gently removed with a vacuum cleaner. Avoid using a brush attachment. Other metal or plastic parts can be wiped with a damp cloth.
WET CLEANING
- For more stubborn dirt, use a damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild cleaner such as glass cleaner. Apply as little pressure as possible, as excessive rubbing may damage the surface.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- If a cleaning cloth is frayed or torn, do not pull the loose threads by hand. This may cause further fraying and interfere with cleaning. Carefully trim the loose threads instead.
CARE
USM recommends oiling the tabletop once every 4 to 12 months to keep it in good condition.
- Brush coarse dirt from the tabletop.
- Wipe the tabletop clean with a damp cloth.
- Apply a thin layer of oil to a dry cloth.
- Finally, polish the surface until the tabletop is dry.
USM Haller metal panels
Due to the natural characteristics of the material, some USM Haller products may acquire minor scratches during production or transport. Please inspect and review the product's condition before purchase to avoid refund or return requests after payment. Scratches and dust may be more visible on dark metal panels than on light ones.
Examples of dark USM panel colours
Graphite Black, Anthracite, Brown, Steel Blue, Ruby Red, Golden Yellow, Green, Gentian Blue, Pure Orange

Examples of light USM panel colours
Pure White, Beige, Mid Grey

Cleaning and maintaining USM units
USM Haller products are known to remain in use for many years. High-quality materials and the strictest production standards play an important role in this longevity.
Maintenance and replacement
- The backward compatibility of USM furniture also ensures that damaged components can be replaced.
Components requiring particular attention
- Scratched or damaged tubes and metal panels can be replaced. All components and accessories can be removed and replaced when necessary.
- After extended use, the sliding tube system for shelves and drop-down doors may no longer open fully. This can often be corrected by pulling the hinge or drop-down door firmly and decisively through its full range once.
- When replacing a light, the old and new lamps may have different colour temperatures. This is normal and results from the ageing of the light source.
Scratches
- To prevent scratches, keep hard, rough or sharp objects away from the surface. Friction can also cause scratches, although these may be regarded as part of the natural patina of time.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Commercially available mild household cleaners with a pH below 9 may be used to clean chrome-plated and powder-coated surfaces.
- Do not use strongly acidic or alkaline cleaners. Soft-fibre cloths or chamois cloths are suitable.
- Do not use abrasive cloths or cloths with coarse fibres. USM cleaning cloths are recommended; contact an authorised USM dealer or distributor for purchase advice.
Cases requiring special care during cleaning
- Do not allow liquids to remain on the product surface. They may penetrate the surface and become difficult to remove completely.
- Coffee stains: Wipe away all coffee spills immediately. Ordinary household cleaner may reduce coffee stains, but may not remove them completely.
- Vase-water stains: Prevent moisture from collecting beneath the vase to protect the USM surface. Household cleaner may remove some staining.
- Essential-oil stains: Essential oils and chemicals leave marks on USM surfaces. Wipe the area dry and use household cleaner, although traces may remain after cleaning.
Moisture and corrosion
Clean and dry USM regularly when it is exposed to steam or high levels of moisture.
In saltwater environments or near swimming pools, high salt and chlorine concentrations can accelerate corrosion. Regular care is especially important in these settings to keep USM in use for many years.
- The powder coating provides effective protection against corrosion.
- Chrome also offers a degree of corrosion resistance, but it is not absolute. To prevent corrosion, do not use USM outdoors or in places with frequent changes in humidity or room temperature, particularly in tropical climates. Rust may develop if USM comes into direct contact with water or if moisture accumulates between the metal panels, balls and tubes.
